Seeing Eye Dog

Two people referred to Isaac as a Seeing Eye dog today.

They meant guide dog, like for a blind person, by the way.  Seeing Eye is a specific program that trains guide dogs, but it's not the only one.  It's a brand name.  But people use the term like it's a generic term, the same way people say Kleenex to refer to any brand of tissue.

But anyway.  The first person that referred to him as a Seeing Eye dog was an employee at a fast food place where I was doing a mystery shopping gig.  I had just driven my car through the drive thru and purchased food.  Then I was to go inside and speak to the manager.  I took Isaac in with me.  All the employees came over to see the dog, I think, and the employee that gave me my order at the drive thru window informed the other employees he was a Seeing Eye dog.

The second person that referred to him as a Seeing Eye dog was a woman explaining to her little boy why there was a dog in the library.  This exchange occurred as I was looking at books.  Printed books, mind you.

  1. Sometimes you need to learn to let things roll off you. As a child I was the target of verbal bullying. I learned to ignore it.

    1. I'm not sure what you mean by letting things roll off me. If you mean not let them upset me, these things didn't upset me. If you mean not even take any notice of them, well, I did take notice of them. I thought it was amusing and wanted to blog about it.

  2. What I found particularly amusing was that you had just driven through the drive through yet the employee who handled your order there told the other employees Isaac was a "seeing eye dog". Maybe that sign we see occasionally that says "blind drive" is really true.

    1. Once at an oil change place, I drove up, got out of the car, got Isaac out, handed my keys to an employee, and he then looked at Isaac and asked me if I was blind.

    2. LOL! I would have messed with the employee a bit and said "Yes, I'm blind".

  3. I too had an amusing incident with my service dog "Casey" when we stopped for lunch at a local McDonald's. After paying for my order, Casey and I moved to the end of the counter where you pick up your order. While waiting, I overheard a male employee behind the counter telling a couple of other employees "that's one of those seeing eye dogs". A moment or so passed when the same employee approached me and said "excuse me sir, but I have a question". I replied " what's your question?". He said to me, "I saw your seeing eye dog but how were you able to read our menu up there and make your order?". I replied "well first of all, I'm not blind and second, he is not a seeing eye dog - he's a service dog trained to do other tasks". (Casey was wearing a vest with a "Service Dog" patch on it). I went on to say "To be exact, Casey is a Diabetic Alert Dog". The employee immediately said "he's diabetic?". At that moment, I totally lost it!
